Every 2nd of July, Matera celebrates the Madonna della Bruna, protector of the city. Among processions, fireworks, and knights, this rite is renewed through tradition and folklore. The processional float carries the statue of the Madonna around the streets filled with people, with the cathedral as its final destination. Soon after, surrounded by the participants and among the amazement of the crowds, the float is completely destroyed, notwithstanding the months of craftsmanship preparation. Each small piece is then collected and preserved by the people as a relic.
