Rupestrian Faith

Faith and religion  in quaint mystical places carved into the rock. Within the rocks, the rupestrian churches are still today proof of great human and spiritual evolution. Among precious architectural decorations, a rich variety of icons, refined oriental-style frescoes, and Saint Peter Barisano  and Saint Lucia alle Malve convey indescribable emotions. Yet, these are not the only ones. There are many of these churches, scattered along the plateau of the Murgia, along its cliffs, or incorporated into the urban fabric of the Sassi of Matera, demonstrating the need for an atavistic recollection. Hermitages, cenobia, crypts, underground lavras, and basilicas stand out in the tuff  and in the color of the earth. Churches not shelters, an expansion of life.
